Proposal Summary

This investigation will employ visible and near-infrared colorimetry to help characterize the composition of the Galilean Satellites and search for signs of recent and current activity on Io and Europa. Proposed tasks include coanalysis of Galileo SSI multispectral imaging data from all four satellites, derivation of wavelength-dependant photometric corrections, quantitative comparison with laboratory spectra, and correlation with NIMS and Voyager observations. Data products to be derived in the course of this study include (1) calibrated, coregistered color composites formatted for intercomparison with related (NIMS, UVS, VGR) data sets; (2) refined estimates of the photometric functions of specific surface units as a function of wavelength; (3) spectral measurements of all four galilean satellites which are directly comparable to one another and to laboratory spectra; (4) Voyager global color mosaics of Io reregistered to Galileo data.
