Proposal Summary

Data from the particles and fields instruments on the Galileo orbiter will be analysed with the primary objectives of identifying the source and loss processes for energetic radiation belt particles in the Jovian magnetosphere, the dominant radial transport mechanism in the middle magnetoshere, and the rate of pitch angle scattering by plasma waves. The results from this analysis will be used to develop a global model for the flow of energy through the Jovian system and the resulting energy deposition into the atmosphere to excite auroral emissions. This will be compared to remote sensing observations of auroral emissivity made by the Galileo SSI camera and by Hubble Space Telescope. The Salammbo code will be used to model the distribution of relativistic electrons in the inner magnetosphere and the results will be incorporated into a synchrotron emissivity code which will be compared to data from the VLA.
