Proposal Summary:

The goal of the proposed work is to provide laboratory input data for airglow models of the terrestrial planets via a study of collisions of oxygen molecules in the Herzberg states with carbon dioxide and oxygen atoms. New measurements of the Venus nightglow from telescopes on Earth raise interesting questions about energy transfer from excited oxygen molecules to oxygen atoms. This collisional energy transfer process will be addressed in the proposed kinetic measurements. On the current grant, we have performed extensive experiments using a two-laser electronic-state-specific method and will extend it to lower vibrational levels in the Herzberg states for both carbon dioxide and O-atom collisions.
