Proposal Summary:

We propose to reduce and analyze data from two of the instruments on the Cassini orbiter, the Imaging Subsystem (ISS) and the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (UVIS) obtained during a Jupiter flyby in December 2000 and January 2001. Because the Cassini flyby of Jupiter is relatively distant there is sufficient time to gather global images and spectra at many phase angles. This in combination with the very high signal/noise UV spectra from the UVIS experiment plus the wide filter and polarizer selection on ISS from 250 nm to 1000 nm will provide an exciting new and unique data base for studies of hazes and clouds, as well as the first ultraviolet movie showing motions in Jupiter's polar stratospheric haze. The analysis of these data will make use of sophisticated radiative transfer, chemical, particle microphysical and transport models.
