PEER REVIEW COMMENT FORM

This form is designed to assist you in reviewing the accompanying PDS DVD volume. Please review the data and accompanying documentation for any instruments or data sets with which you may be familiar and respond to the following= questions regarding their correctness. If you have any comments not covered by the= form please feel free to add them as well.

Thank you for your Peer Review participation.

·        /AAREADME.TXT – this file explains DVD organization and contents, and tells the user how= to get started. It should contain a complete outline of the DVD directory structure as well as a description of important files found in each= directory.

1)     = Does the AAREADME.TXT adequately describe the contents and layout of the DVD? How could it be improved?

At= first reading it looks OK. I’ll need to dig into the data to see if it’s= really OK or not.

2)     = Is the "Volume Contents and Structure" correct and does it allow you= to navigate easily through the DVD? If not, how could this be improved?

Appear= s to be standard and OK.

3)     = Do you need any additional information to be able to start using this DVD?= Could any of the information on the use of this DVD be deleted without impacting= the disk’s usability?

All= OK.

·        INFO.TXT – this file describes the contents of the directory in which it is located. An *INFO.TXT file should exist in every directory beneath the root. Up to 4 characters may be added to the front of the INFO.TXT filename to identify= the directory to which the file applies (e.g. CATINFO.TXT, SOFTINFO.TXT, etc.). Each *INFO.TXT file should include a brief description of the purpose and contents of files contained in the directory. It should also point to files= in other directories that are helpful for understanding the directory's= contents.

4)     = Please list any directory (other than the root) which does not contain an *INFO.TXT file.

/DATA directory does not contain *INFO.TXT file.

5)     = Is the information contained in any of the *INFO.TXT files inaccurate or incomplete? How could it be improved?

INDXINFO.TXT and CATINFO.TXT appear OK.

·        /CATALOG/ directory – this directory contains brief descriptions of the mission (MISSION.CAT), spacecraft (INSTHOST.CAT), instrument (*INST.CAT), and data= sets (*DS.CAT) as well as a list of personnel PERSON.CAT) and references= (REF.CAT).

6)     = Are the MISSION.CAT, INSTHOST.CAT and *INST.CAT templates complete and accurate? What needs to be added to make these descriptions complete?

I was initially unable to open any *.CAT files (Windows NT OS). I was able to save= to the desktop and then open w/notepad etc. This was a minor annoyance/inconvenience.

MER_MISSION.CAT – I was pleasantly surprised by the large amount of useful and interesting information in Here. There is one glaring omission – the Ls time at= landing is not given (but location and calendar dates are given). Please supply Ls of= both landings. Also supply local time-of-day of landing.

MER1,2_INSTHOST.CAT – files appear OK.

INSTHOST.CAT – file appears OK.

7)     = Does the *DS.CAT accurately describe the data and associated parameters?

DATASET.CAT – I note that the “confidence” section is left blank. Confidence= information would be useful (if available…I presume this is instrument/retrieval= error?)

8)     = Does the *PERS.CAT list all personnel associated with the production of the data and/or documentation provided on this DVD? Is the contact information= provided complete and current? (please provide corrections if any)

PERSON.CAT – Seems complete.

9)     = Does the REF.CAT list all references that may be useful for understanding the= data contained on this DVD? Do any of the references that are included not apply= to the data or mission phase represented on this particular DVD and need to be deleted? (please provide the full citation for any references that need to= be added)

REF.CA= T – I’m not really in a position to judge, but it seems complete.

·        /DATA/ subdirectories – please review the data and associated documentation= found in the subdirectories below the /DATA directory.

10)  Is the organization of the /DATA directory and its subdirectories logical, and does= it facilitate your access to and use of the data?

Data= file structure (high vs low rate, MER1 vs MER2) is logically laid out.

11)  Is each data= file accompanied by a label file (*.LBL) which accurately describes the contents= of the data file?

In= looking at file 1HIGHRATE.LBL, for example, I note that 13 columns are promised. For= each of the 13, there is a description starting with the word “COLUMN”. I= would prefer this to read “COLUMN1”, “COLUMN2” etc. Obviously with 4= columns (say), it’s easy to find the descriptor for the data column in question, but with= 8+ columns, it’s less easy to count down and find the descriptor in question.= This is more a problem when all data has the same appearance – as is the case= here (as opposed to, say, a column of such temperatures (wi= th a format like 150.7) next to a column of air densities (with a format like= 0.000793). I have this same comment/suggestion for other PDS-atmospheres data (e.g., Viking). Format descriptors appear OK.

12)  From looking= at these the *.LBL files do you understand how to read the data? If not, what further information would you need to be able to read it?

Yes= (see caveat above).

13)  Are there any errors in, or other problems with, the data?

I downloaded 1HIGHRATE.TAB into both excel and= kalaidagraph and made a few plots. Wasn’t able to find any obvious errors. (Well,= actually, during the 5th 6th of the data (i.e., between 4/6 and= 5/6 of time expired), plots show a large deviation. What happened here?= Parachute deploy or something like that?)

14)  Would you be= able to use the data without contacting the principal investigator for more information? If not, what additional information would you need in order to= use and interpret the data?

It= appears for now that I could use the data.

15)  Are the data= in a form useful for your scientific investigations?

Yes = – in the sense that they are easily accessible (e.g., ascii). Whether they help me= know about the structure of the atmosphere is another matter.

·        /DOCUMENT/ directory – This directory contains documents important to the understanding of the data contained in the DVD. PDS standards require that= one copy of each of these documents be in ASCII format (*.ASC); however, other versions may also be provided (e.g. HTML, MS Word, etc.). In addition, there may be image files (e.g. GIF, TIFF, PS, etc.) containing scanned copies of figures or full pages from the source document.

16)  Does an *.ASC version exist for each document? Can any of the versions of the documents be improved to more accurately represent the original?

There= is no /DOCUMENT directory (I’m looking in http://atmos.nmsu.edu/P= DS/data/merimu_1001/).

17)  Are you able= to view all of the document and image files (*.HTM, *.GIF, *.PS, etc) correctly= on your system?

N/A

·        /SOFTWARE/ directory – This directory may contain software useful for= manipulating or viewing some or all of the data found on this DVD.  (Not all PDS disk volumes have this directory.)

18)  Does the SOFTINFO.TXT file give you enough information to find and use the= appropriate software?

N/S = – no such directory.

19)  Does the= software included on this volume install and run correctly on your system?

20)  Is the= software's user interface intuitive? Do you understand the output the software= generates?

21)  Can you= provide any additional software which you would feel comfortable distributing for viewing or manipulating one or all of the data sets contained on this= DVD?

·        Overall= look and feel of the DVD

22)  Is the organization of the DVD intuitive? If not, how could it be improved?

I’m= looking online…no DVD.

23)  Is the DVD= easy to use?

·        Additional Comments – Please add any additional comments or suggestions you may= have for improvement.
