Cassini CIRS Sample Volume Peer Review Minutes 15 January 2004 Reviewers Present: Lyle Huber Mark Vincent Ron Joyner Steve Adams Conor Nixon Tyler Brown Barney Conrath Ah-San Wong Diane Conner Reviewers Absent: Amy Simon-Miller Mark Showalter Mitch Gordon Jeff Cuzzi Sushil Atreya Mike Flasar Reta Beebe Review comments submitted prior to the review are posted at http://atmos.nmsu.edu/review/cirs.html and should be reviewed for any and all actions. The panel's decision was that it would like to see the resolution of these liens before approving the CIRS Sample Volume. The spreadsheet of action items is also posted on the web site above. The following major issues were identified as of being the highest importance to address: 1) The labeling of .FMT and .TXT files must be fixed. 2) The SOFTWARE directories are not in good shape. The cirs_* routines if they are to remain on the volume must be rewritten to remove all hard-coded directory locations. Otherwise, they should probably be removed. (Putting them in an EXTRAS directory does not really solve the problem.) 2a) All SOFTWARE documentation and examples are insufficient for users. 3) Again, the issue was raised about the appropriateness for archive of Vanilla-formatted data. However, it is clear that a redesign of the archive database is very likely not in the CIRS budget. At the very least, the labeling method for the .VAR files is still inadequate. Huber and Joyner will assist the CIRS team in designing a satisfactory resolution. Further discussion relative to these and other issues went as follows: - Examples should be generated which would generate the wavenumber and bin size information from a Vanilla call and also one which would extract a subset from the database into a data file. There was also some trouble with the units of wavenumber and flux although Nixon noted that this information is in the SIS. The consensus was to put unit information also into an example and into the .FMT files. - AIFM files are a sort of intermediate level of processing and may be redundant. - The C23* files in the DOCUMENT directory should be moved to the INDEX directory. Huber will provide a labeling/naming system for these files. - Any remaining SOFTWARE will need to be labeled. Huber will provide a labeling method. - The AAREADME.TXT file and certain other documentation need to be improved. - Conrath asked about the NESR (Noise Equivalent Spectral Radiance) files. These should be included. - PDS will return information on DVD formats to Conner and to the CIRS team. - Other simple issues are noted in the individual reviewer's comments and should be addressed.
