Proposal Summary:
Under the Planetary Major Equipment Program, funds are requested to purchase a gas sample handling system to be used at the McMath Fourier transform spectrometer located at the McMath-Pierce Solar telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory. The system consists of a high speed/high vacuum turbo pump with an oil-free diaphragm roughing pump, two gas manifolds and isolation values, special usage pressure gauges for higher temperatures and higher pressure ranges and gauges to montior and control the pumping station. This will be used by NASA researchers from JPL, Ames, Langley and Goddard who regularly record laboratory spectra of species observed in planets and comets. The purchase of special pressure gauges for high pressure and high temperatures will permit this facility to be used for laboratory studies needed to interpret spectra of brown dwarf stars and exosolar planets.
