Proposal Summary:

The goal of this proposed work is to continue the measurement of absolute excitation cross sections in singly- and highly-charged positive ions which are detected in emission in the Io torus and Saturn's magnetosphere. Use is made of JPL's Highly-Charged Ion (HCI) Facility in which cross sections are measured by the electron energy-loss method, a versatile technique developed at JPL. The energy range is typically threshold through 5 x threshold. Measurements are compared to, or published together with, accurate multistate R-matrix results in the same energy range. The HCIs are generated using a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source. A merged electron-ion beams geometry is used. Emphasis is on measurement of cross sections for resonance and forbidden transitions in O2+, O3+, S3+, and S4+ for the Io torus problem. The status of the singly-charged magnetospheric species, such as He+, Na+, K+ and Cl+, will then be assessed and cross sections measured in those emitters which can provide a diagnostic of ion density and electron temperature. It is planned to submit the new and prior-measured cross sections to the CHIANTI database for ease of access and use by the plasma modelers. The work proposed herein supports the continuing observations of the Galileo UVS instrument at Jupiter, the upcoming Cassini UV Mission at Saturn, and other ground-based and satellite (e.g., Chandra) observations of comets and the outer planets.
