LPW

The LangMuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument utilizes cylindrical sensors on two 7-meter booms to assure one is always outside the spacecraft wake. Characteristics of the instrument are:
    • Sensor I-V sweeps (at least ±50 V range)
    • Low frequency (f: 0.05-10 Hz) E-field power
    • E-Spectra measurements up to 2 MHz
    • White noise (50 kHz-2 MHz) sounding

    Measurement Objectives

LPW measures electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) in the upper atmosphere and electric field wave power at low frequencies - important in determining ion heating. The LPW data is used to locate the ionopause, derive recombination rates and provide an estimate of Poynting flux into the ionosphere and ionosphere heating rates (with MAG). Wave spectra of naturally emitted and actively simulated Langmuir waves are used to calibrate density measurements.
